Next step to “surgery-by-wire“ middle ear surgery

June 08, 2012

VITOM, a system routinely applied in the Surgical Cockpit, is upgraded by an important feature. From now on, the optical system can be moved by means of a piezoelectric holding arm. This enables an improved placement of the system and makes it more suitable for highly complex ear surgeries. The image quality is comparable to modern microscopes, even better under certain conditions. The advantage of the system is that it allows performing videomicroscopic surgical procedures. Thus, the surgeon does not need to look through the optical path of the microscope anymore, which makes his preparation more comfortable and precise.
