Basic Course on Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS)

The IRDC training “Basic FESS” presented physicians with limited practical experience the good opportunity of entering the operative procedure. For this purpose, the basics of the surgical set-up and all important landmarks were explained by course instructor Lars Reuther, a specialist for Otolaryngology. Subsequently, the physicians from Denmark and Germany used a simulator on clinical models to train a FESS I-IV according to Simmen using an optical navigation system. The trainees were supported by a surgical manual. The so-called procedure point navigation (PPN) helps to complete the complicated steps of an operation in the best possible sequence. This avoids unnecessary deviations, which could be harmful in some cases. The practical training was completed by a visitation in the operating room during a sinus surgery.
