The IRDC hosts a training course “Middle Ear Surgery” for the fifth time in a row. Once again medical doctors from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Sri Lanka, Russia, Ethiopia and Germany were warmly welcomed guests at IRDC and partner clinics. Surgeries were carried out in the surgical cockpit at the ACQUA Clinic Leipzig (Prof. Dr. Gero Strauß) and at the ENT-University Clinic (Univ.-Prof. Dr. Andreas Dietz). Simulator exercises took place at the IRDC and at the Institute of Anatomy. “Meanwhile we have come closer to our goal of new course concept. The lectures are centered on our operating books and include many aspects of medical technology. All this leads to increasing interest, despite the current excess supply of training courses is very large, especially from abroad”, so Prof. Gero Strauß, Director IRDC in Leipzig.

In the complicated labyrinth of the temporal bone many structures must be taken into account, here are facial nerve, auditory nerve, the major vessel in the close proximity to inner ear and small ear ossicle. In the past 5 years modern assistance systems became very important. Herewith remaining distance between the tool of the surgeon and the risk structure can be determined or the facial nerve can be surrounded with a protective shield. The consequences are better operation results and shorte wound healing time on diseases such as middle ear disease. Technological driver are particularly companies from Germany such as KARL STORZ Endoskope or Inomed for nerve stimulation. There are also young companies in Leipzig such as SPI, Phacon or MGO who start playing an important role in this connection.
